Is Blue Monday your most depressing day of the year? If you need motivation to turn that frown upside down, read on. Blue Monday falls on the 3rd Monday of January every year since 2005 and was invented to get people booking holidays to cheer their self-up. Psychologist Dr. Cliff Arnall looked at factors like the number of days since Christmas, motivation levels of workers, debts and the weather to identify January 20th as the day when our spirits are lowest but later pooh-poohed his own formula as a self-fulfilling prophecy.
When I think of the law of attraction and getting back what you put out there, thinking about today as the most depressing day of the year might just make it that. If you think today is going to be the most depressing day of the year then that is what you will get. Some articles I’ve read about Blue Monday say that today is the day when most people ditch the new year promises (I don’t use the word resolutions) they made to their self, so what if we make a conscious effort to keep going and turn that frown upside down, literally! Why not trick our brains into being happy on Blue Monday? I’ve posted about tricking our brain on my Instagram story a few times in the past and always get great feedback so why not try this, stop what you’re doing and smile at absolutely nothing. The physical act of smiling sends happy signals to the brain and you might cheer someone else up while you’re at it, win win. As Spike Milligan said, smiling is infectious, you catch it like the flu because when someone smiles at you, you smile too.
Listen to the story you’re telling yourself, if you feel you’ve already failed on your new year promises, you will block yourself from achieving because your mind believes what you tell it. Don’t see your setbacks as failures, they can be learnings, for example if you can figure out what triggered your setback you can work on that in the future. If you didn’t make yourself a new year promise, that’s ok too because you’re already enough as you are, trying to get through your day can be tough enough and even the thought of trying to change something or achieve something extra can be overwhelming. If you feel like you would like to make yourself a new year promise, there is no time like the present. You do what is right for you and that is how you will choose happiness on this so-called Blue Monday.
Once your cup is full (because you can’t pour from an empty cup) and you’ve looked after yourself, why not help a colleague, friend or family member if you can. If you see someone else suffering from Blue Monday, you could always stick the kettle on and have a Brew Monday.
